Most analysts remain on the sidelines ahead of BBY’s report. The consensus recommendation of the 27 pros following the retail stock is Hold, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence.

Among them is Wedbush analyst Seth Basham. “The macro has been more volatile than expected with consumers facing significant inflationary pressures and lower-income households making decisions to trade down in some categories such as televisions,” Basham writes in a note to clients. Although Best Buy said back-to-school sales came in ahead of its expectations, it likely experienced a slowdown in store traffic in October, the analyst adds.

Earnings Spotlight: HPOn Nov. 18, Credit Suisse analyst Shannon Cross downgraded HP (HPQ (opens in new tab), $29.17) stock to Neutral from Outperform (the equivalents of Hold and Buy, respectively), saying weakening demand for PCs and printing equipment from both consumers and businesses will likely weigh on revenue and margins in the near term.

Indeed, in its fiscal third-quarter earnings call in August, HPQ warned of a “challenging macro and demand environment, including inflation, logistics constraints and pricing dynamics” that will impact its fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year results. As such, it lowered its fiscal 2022 earnings per share guidance to a range of $4.02 to $4.12, down from the $4.24 to $4.38 range it was targeting in May.

As for HP’s fiscal Q4 results, which the company will report after the Nov. 22 close, analysts forecast earnings of 84 cents per share (-10.6% YoY) and revenue of $14.7 billion (-12.0% YoY).

“The market remains volatile, with bear rallies sprinkled in between sharp pullbacks, as recessionary indicators flash red,” says Deutsche Bank analyst Nicole DeBlase (Hold). “A pullback in consumer spending/residential construction is still evident, although a few other neighboring industries have more recently flagged deterioration, including transports, chemicals, and autos.” Still, DeBlase says machinery groups “remain steadfast in their commentary that demand remains unchanged and robust, driving order books to new record highs.”

As such, analysts are targeting impressive growth for DE over the three-month period ended Oct. 31, with consensus estimates for EPS at $7.12 (+72.8% YoY) and revenue of $13.4 billion (+30.3% YoY).
