Shares of the burrito chain have done well over the last 12 months, up 13.9% versus a decline of 9.9% for the S&P 500.
Oppenheimer analyst Brian Bittner (Outperform, the equivalent of Buy) sees even more upside for CMG stock based on his price target of $1,875. This gives shares implied upside of nearly 11% over the next 12 months or so. The analyst believes investor sentiment has room to improve based on several reasons, including the Street’s “conservative” estimate for 2023 same-store sales growth of 5%, the potential for positive revisions to earnings per share (EPS) forecasts, and accelerating unit growth through higher-return “Chipotlanes” (the restaurant’s digital-order, drive-thru pick-up locations).
Still, for Chipotle’s fourth-quarter earnings, Bittner expects a slight EPS miss due in part to “temporary spikes in produce costs.” The Street, for its part, believes CMG will report Q4 earnings of $8.91 per share, up 59.7% year-over-year (YoY). Revenue is forecast to arrive at $2.2 billion (+13.8% YoY).

These included the media conglomerate’s shocking move in November to oust CEO Bob Chapek and replace him with former CEO Bob Iger, as well as a big fiscal fourth-quarter top- and bottom-line miss (opens in new tab). The Dow Jones stock struggled amid the news, shedding 7.9% over the three-month period.

As for Disney’s fiscal first-quarter earnings report, due out after Wednesday’s close, consensus estimates are for EPS of 79 cents per share (-25.5% YoY) and revenue of $23.4 billion (+7.1% YoY).
“We’re cautiously optimistic [Disney’s revenue] target is achievable,” says Sophie Lund-Yates, equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown. “In theme parks, we expect to hear about positive momentum as China reopens and travel continues to normalise. This will have a strong read-across for profits.” The analyst adds that consumer spending is holding up better than expected in some areas, which could result in solid Disney+ subscriber numbers, “especially after Netflix’s (NFLX (opens in new tab)) better-than-expected quarter, despite tough economic conditions.”

Analysts, on average, expect the digital payments processor to report earnings of $1.20 per share (+8.1% YoY) and revenue of $7.4 billion (+6.8% YoY).
Deutsche Bank analyst Bryan Keane (Buy) will be looking for details on U.S. branded growth, which he believes will arrive at 4% in Q4, the lower end of the average that’s been reported by U.S. e-commerce firms. Keane will also be watching the company’s fiscal 2023 guidance, especially after PayPal’s late-January announcement that it is laying off roughly 2,000 employees, or 7% of its global workforce, in order to cut costs.
“While we remain confident in PYPL’s ability to manage costs and grow EPS in fiscal 2023, we will continue to monitor macro headwinds facing the overall e-commerce market along with share shifts,” Keane says.
